iBook. Regency Complex emotions. John Mason is enraged when his fiancé, Lady Chartley, left after her father stole £8,000. After 18 months he tracks her down, but she is living poorly as a companion - no signs of wealth. Indeed she is practically imprisoned in the property along with the wife, with no access to her salary, and unable to talk to anyone. As John has secret nightly talks his anger falls away and he still loves her. She develops a plan and frees the wife and herself, and regains her pride and self esteem, as well as restarting her musical career. She also catches the partners who stole even more than her father, so John's sister and nephew get their money back and profit.

While I loved the exploration of a woman growing from adversity and finding her own inner strength and respect, it was a tad 2 dimensional and a tad twee.
Lady Mary's father had committed suicide, and she was trying to hide this from his 3 business partners, including her fiancé. They accuse him of embezzlement and theft. She escapes and finds work as a companion, but finds herself imprisoned by the bully husband. She fixes everything herself, with help from her ex-fiancé and others.
