Publisher Description

“Fascinating... A thought-provoking journey into emotion science.” - Wall Street Journal

“A singular book, remarkable for the freshness of its ideas and the boldness and clarity with which they are presented.” - Scientific American

“A brilliant and original book on the science of emotion, by the deepest thinker about this topic since Darwin.” - Daniel Gilbert, best-selling author of Stumbling on Happiness

The science of emotion is in the midst of a revolution on par with the discovery of relativity in physics and natural selection in biology. Leading the charge is psychologist and neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett, whose research overturns the long-standing belief that emotions are automatic, universal, and hardwired in different brain regions. Instead, Barrett shows, we construct each instance of emotion through a unique interplay of brain, body, and culture. A lucid report from the cutting edge of emotion science, How Emotions Are Made reveals the profound real-world consequences of this breakthrough for everything from neuroscience and medicine to the legal system and even national security, laying bare the immense implications of our latest and most intimate scientific revolution.

“Mind-blowing.” - Elle

“Chock-full of startling, science-backed findings... An entertaining and engaging read.” - Forbes

Book 5 the narrator gets a 1

This is a fantastic book that I had to buy twice and then read

I had to buy it twice because I listened to a lot of audiobooks. I assumed I could listen to this book also on audio after several hours of trying to bear the terrible narration of what sounds like a sorority girl on helium I had to give up and buy a version that I could read so I could get her terrible voice out of my head.

The content of this book is five out of 510 out of 10. It’s unfortunate that they chose the person they did to read it. The reading of this book by this particular narrator is at times weirdly monotone punctuated by weird articulations and pronouncing certain words, and when those words are pronounced over and over again, it’s nauseating.

I’m going to go leave a five star review on the book but the audiobook get gets a two because the narrator is terrible

Cognitive Behavioral Recovery Toolkit

This was an infinitely beautiful, deeply insightful, and dutifully undercover blueprint for anyone looking to face the wrath of addiction (in any form) head on - with a little bit of well-placed sass along the way. A powerful new voice asking the very best questions at the very best time. Lisa Feldman Barrett delivers the punchline of her 8th life maxim in style. Shoutout to dad and daughter for their equally gracious contribution to the work.
