Publisher Description
The Cadian Gate is broken, and the Imperium is riven in two. The might of the Traitor Legions, kept shackled for millennia behind walls of iron and sorcery, has been unleashed on a darkening galaxy. Among those seeking vengeance on the Corpse Emperor’s faltering realm are the Death Guard, once proud crusaders of the Legiones Astartes, now debased creatures of terror and contagion.
Mighty warbands carve bloody paths through the void, answering their lord primarch’s call to war. And yet for all their dread might in arms, there is no escape from the vicious legacies of the past, ones that will pursue them from the ruined daemon-worlds of the Eye of Terror and out into the smouldering wastes of the Imperium Nihilus.

One of my favorites
I have listened to the vast majority of the black library audiobook works, and I can tell you with absolute certainty that this is one of the best examples of the 40k universe that exists. When people ask me what to read to get into the 40k universe, I say Devastation of Baal, I say Helsreach, I say Horus Rising, and now I say Lords of Silence.
The narration is top-tier, and the setting, characters and descriptions of events are so richly detailed and thoroughly engrossing as to leave you breathless at times. I caught myself holding my breath more than once out of the pure suspense built up by the vivid detail of some of the truly horrible, hideous things that happen to some of the unfortunate souls in this story. Instantly shot into my top ten favorite 40k audiobooks.
I really need to hammer home how great the voice acting for this one is, just amazing. I was blown away by his range and creativity with the various characters, the way his voice so accurately conveys the enormous bulk of each towering Lord of Silence vs. that of the shriveling Captain, its voice acting perfection. They left me wanting more.
Five stars.
The narrative arc is so well executed and flows so beautifully, disgustingly, it’s all so descriptive and lovingly crafted. This has to be some of the best world building I’ve ever had the pleasure of spending time with. Five stars.
Death Guard
Nurgle Provides!
Death Guard finally shines!
Well paced story, great characters, provides great detail into Death Guard that has been sorely lacking. Only thing to keep in mind is that story jumps back and forth between current events and events that led to the book’s beginning. Writing handles it well though.
Shows dichotomy between the old guard of Mortarion’s legion and the younger, more aggressive and impulsive, members.
Best descriptions of surroundings and appearances of Death Guard in any story with them that I’ve read. Really paints a disgustingly vivid picture.
Also Nurglings!!! Equally adorable and horrifying!
