Publisher Description
#1 New York Times bestselling author John Grisham delivers a gripping, suspenseful page-turner about a Paris honeymoon gone horribly wrong—and the nightmare that follows.
After Paul and Chelsea Tanner’s fairytale wedding, their future is full of promise. But their honeymoon to Paris takes a dark, shocking turn when they are kidnapped while on a day trip to the French countryside. Who would target them, and why? It turns out this is not the first crime of its kind. The search for clues soon stretches across borders, with the FBI, CIA, and French Intelligence trying to work together to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Struggling to find answers, a young lawyer is recruited to be the bait in an elaborate CIA operation.
Propulsive and surprising, The French Illusion is an unmistakable Grisham thrill ride—gripping and impossible to put down.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
The life-or-death stakes of a brutal kidnapping give way to an international espionage plot in John Grisham’s fever-pitched thriller. When Chelsea and Paul are kidnapped during their honeymoon in Paris, Chelsea’s well-off parents have no trouble paying her ransom and gaining her freedom. But even after Paul’s middle-class family practically moves mountains to do the same, the abductors refuse to let him go. It’s a situation with kidnapped newlyweds that the FBI’s Andrew Strong keeps encountering—and in every case, the groom served in the military. The story unfolds at a furious pace, and Grisham keeps you just as desperate to discover the criminals’ true intentions as the story’s highly competent investigators. Soon, the action shifts to a CIA agent and a former Justice Department prosecutor as they plan a high-stakes sting operation. Longtime Grisham collaborator Michael Beck narrates this whipsawing thrill ride with a pitch-perfect gravitas you’ll never want to turn off.
Customer Reviews
The illusion is the book’s ending
I love Grisham. This novel was enjoyable up until the end. It seems he either ran into a publisher’s deadline or gas. The story ending was unsatisfying, forced and unrealistic. Mr Grisham can and should do better, not give us an illusion of a story wrapped up with true, enjoyable closure.
Only at chapter 7
Only at chapter 7 and the beginning are Kubrick movie level of grabbing attention. First of all you read this and even theory arise about your actions in such situations, the answer is contact FBI immediately. Don’t call, just drive and stop in local office. Do not take phone with you (buy cheap new one on your way to it). Explain it and let professionals use all the time they have. You can watch X-files just to understand the tech could be involved and how FBI and NSA could track voices from video recordings to determine area locations. Never act on yourself and follow the game where rules are determined by kidnapping organized crime. You paid your taxes for this, and do not even think how FBI will search them. It’s not allowed to you to know the methods. This is how they trained us in school of intelligence and spec-ops. Take into account classified and top secrets tech you should not know about.
