Poison Ivy Did It Better
This book is adamantly recommended across BookTok, and unfortunately, this is one of those rare times when the hype completely missed me.
Simply put, it’s boring.
For all its pages, fantasy elements, romance, family drama, and supposed twists, I walked away feeling like very little actually happened. Many times throughout this listen, I found myself quite literally rolling my eyes at the dull, recycled plot and the heavy overuse of repetitive phrases like “scrubbed my hand down my face.” By the end, I was left thinking: “What was the point of writing this?”
The “surprise twist” at the end wasn’t much of a twist at all and, again, relied on an overused twist plotline.
The narrative dynamic felt less like an epic fantasy and more like an attempt to process parental resentment through a fantastical lens—which could have been compelling, but here it never developed into anything particularly profound.
And the “enemies-to-lovers” romance? Watered down at best. I’ve read this trope done with considerably more tension, chemistry, and emotional payoff. The magic system lacks originality, and even the FMC feels uninspired; Batman’s Poison Ivy did it better.
The voice acting was okay, but it wasn’t anything to write home about. I do appreciate the duet-style narration, though.
Overall, 2 stars. I finished this, but it’s probably not something I’ll think about—or even remember.
Deadly and devastatingly beautiful!
Truly one of the best books I have read/listened to this year! Hands down, 6⭐️.
The story was very easy to follow, and yet, it was easy to get lost through the entrance of it all. I loved the healing revenge, the light and love found after the lost pieces, and seeing color through both main characters.
