We normally think of attachment theory—the importance of developing strong bonds with others as a part of strengthening ourselves—in terms of parenting, but the need to connect with others hardly goes away in adulthood. The three basic attachment styles—secure, anxious, and avoidant—are just as useful when exploring relationships between adults as they are in thinking about toddlers.
