APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
British author David Nicholls finds an endearing way to tell a love story in this novel. The day they graduate from university on June 15, 1988, casual acquaintances Dexter and Emma somewhat awkwardly fall into bed together. Each chapter follows the pair on the same day over the course of the next 20 years as wealthy, handsome Dex and artsy, bohemian Em struggle to find their careers, goals, and purpose in life. Much like Nicholas Sparks, Nicholls strikes a perfect blend of humour, romance, and pathos as Dex and Em slowly come to realize that maybe what they’ve been looking for has been right there all along. Anna Bentinck’s warm narration captures both characters’ dry wit and self-doubt, and perfectly nails their essential differences as well. The novel’s episodic construction makes this a great listen for a commute or any other situation where you can enjoy it one piece at a time.
