APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
With The Thursday Murder Club, Richard Osman helped revive the whodunnit and kick off a wave of cosy crime novels. Released this year, The Impossible Fortune is the fifth TMC story and it has been just as enthusiastically received as its predecessors. This audio version is narrated with vim by Fiona Shaw. There’s a knotty plot, involving the disappearance of the best man from a wedding party. But it’s also a chance for long-time readers to check back in with the members of the club. Former secret service operative Elizabeth is grieving her husband, Joyce is preoccupied with her daughter’s wedding and Ron and Ibrahim have their own adventure too. As ever, one of series’ chief charms is to remind us that life is long and storied, and that our later years may be the most interesting and satisfying ones we have.
