Basra is a port city in Southern Iraq, very close to the border with Kuwait. It is Iraq's third largest city with a population of 2,150,000.

The city is one of the ports from which the fictional Sinbad the Sailor journeyed. It played an important role in early Islamic history and was built in 636.

Basra is also Iraq's main port, although it does not have deep water access, which is handled at the port of Umm Qasr.
