Horatio Alger, Jr. was a prolific American author of the 19-th century.  

'Chester Rand' is a social novel which represents a bright example of Horatio Alger's writing style. As in his many other books the central figure of the story is poor boy. Chester Rand lives with his mother in a small cottage not far from a church. His father has died leaving them an amount of money the last part of which is now spent on the coal for the coming winter.
