This is the second full-length mystery pairing amateur sleuth Harriet Vane with Lord Peter Wimsey. While taking a solitary walking holiday along the English coast to recover from her trial (Strong Poison), Harriet discovers a man’s body on a deserted beach, his throat cut. By the time authorities arrive, the tide has washed away much of the evidence. The dead man turns out to be Paul Alexis, a young professional dancing partner at a local resort with a complicated background. Was it suicide, political intrigue, or murder for inheritance? Harriet begins investigating on her own but soon teams up with Wimsey, whose presence adds both romantic tension and intellectual counterpoint. Together they decipher codes, unravel false alibis, and reconstruct a complex plot involving blackmail and a disguised killer. Blending intricate detection, witty dialogue, and seaside atmosphere, the novel develops Harriet and Wimsey’s relationship while showcasing Sayers’s skill with fair-play puzzles.
