Jazz History: The Classic Quartet Composition from Standards to Bossa-Nova

About the book: Beginner and intermediate level jazz practitioners will find this e-book a valuable resource as they create and develop their musical knowledge and vocabulary. It is also recommended material for jazz history, improvisation classes, and music appreciation classes for a wider public. 

The e-book format allows for seamless transitions between text, musical notation, and audio. It develops in a way which reflects a process through which an improvisor might elaborates ideas: the transformation of a motive. Focusing on the fertile period between 1930 and 1967, each chapter presents an overview and description of a musical genre considered an essential component of jazz history and performance, beginning with a standard of the Great American Songbook, continuing with bebop, hard bop and modal jazz, and concluding with the Brazilian bossa-nova introduced into the jazz vocabulary in the early to middle 1960s.

About the author:  Prof. Afonso Claudio (UFRJ) is a professor on the faculty of two important music programs in the Brazilian public university system: The School of Communication (ECO) at UFRJ and PROEMUS at UNIRIO. This project reflects the integration of his two areas of expertise: the pedagogy and practice of jazz studies and history and the application of technology in music education. This book is the result of a post-doctoral research project realized under the auspices of the Department of Graduate Studies in Music (PPGM) at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO).
