The novel primarily informs the readers about the welfare of the animals and teaches them to treat animals politely and kindly, but at the same time it also teaches how to treat people with sympathy, kindness, and respect.

The novel was also listed in the BBC’s survey The Big Read in the year 2003.

Anna Sewell, the author, was born in Great Yarmouth, England. She had a brother named Philip. Her brother was an engineer in Europe.

When she was fourteen, one day, while walking home from her school, she fell down in the rain and both her ankles were injured. Unfortunately, the injury was mistreated and as a result she was unable to stand on her feet and walk for the rest of her life.
