EXCERPT

The nights were warm on the island. As dusk came, people came to the beach to watch the sun light the sky with brilliant hues of purple and orange, and then slowly fade out. The locals revelled in it, and in each other. Couples held hands and wrapped arms around one another.

I wanted to do the same to Robert the second we returned — wanted to feel all of him against me — but even on a tropical island parents have responsibilities. I had made a point of promising myself we would not be the kind of parents who outsourced all our parenting to the nanny. And so we told our employee to go enjoy a night on the town, and did the job.

Richard was fussing and in need of food, and then attention, and before we knew it the hour was late. Robert volunteered to put him to bed and while he was busy I poured us both two sizeable glasses of wine, remembering with a smile that this whole adventure had started because Robert needed a drink.

As I moved to pick up the glasses from the kitchen counter and carry them to the sitting area, I caught a glimpse of movement from outside the window overlooking the beach. Just yards away, shaded in moonlight, a young couple was tangled together in a warm embrace.

I smiled, watching as the man let his hands trail up and down the woman’s back. They were both in swimwear, their bodies still wet from a late night dip in the ocean. 

I envied them — their openness — but then realized that here, on this island, there wasn’t so much of a difference between them and us. We were all free. We were all open.

At that moment, however, I had yet to realize just how open. I gasped as the man threaded a finger through the back of the woman’s bikini top, undoing the knot. I gasped as it fell to the ground, and the woman stood bare-breasted in the moonlight. He quickly pressed her bare chest against hers, drawing her into a passionate kiss.

They wasted no time, their hunger for one another evident even from a distance. Still meeting his kiss, she moved her hand across his muscular chest, drawing imaginary zig-zags against his skin, until getting down to the waistband of his swim shorts. As her hand slipped inside, he lifted his face to the sky, his moan of pleasure so loud I could hear it through the pane of glass.

Their kiss broke, as her lips began to follow the same route as her hand, tracing down his body, kissing his neck, his chest, his stomach, until finally she knelt down before him.
