Mutton Birds and Other Birds

William Herbert Guthrie-Smith was a New Zealand farmer, author and conservationist. He was particularly interested in the remote and untouched places of New Zealand. This book describes various birds native to Stewart Island, a small landmass off the coast of the South Island. Many rare birds were able to survive on Stewart Island because of the absence of cats, rats, stoats and other invasive species introduced by European settlers to the main islands. This book records conservation efforts and documents Stewart Island birdlife with photography.
