Harlan Coben has a way of elevating suspense so that the tension is almost unbearable—yet we weren’t about to put this book down, even for dinner. This thriller revolves around Marc Seidman, a surgeon who survives a murder attempt to find that his wife was less fortunate and that his infant daughter has gone missing. What follows is a sweat-inducing race to meet a ransom demand. Coben guides us through an impenetrable snarl of questions around who the kidnappers are and what their motives might be. The book’s ending had us swiping backward to reread key passages, just to relish that “aha!” feeling.
