Publisher Description

The Southern Historical Association, and indeed the entire historical profession, lost a great friend, advocate, and laborer in the vineyard with the death of Bennett Harrison Wall, Emeritus Professor at the University of Georgia. Ben, as he was known to his host of friends and associates, died on August 1, 2003, in Athens, Georgia, of complications from surgery. Born December 7, 1914, in Raleigh, North Carolina, and a graduate of Wake Forest University (B.A., 1933) and the University of North Carolina (M.A., 1941; Ph.D., 1946), Wall taught for significant periods of time at three major southern universities: the University of Kentucky (1944-1964), Tulane University (1964-1980), and the University of Georgia (1980-1985), and for briefer periods at various other schools. He served for thirty-three years (1952-1985) as secretary-treasurer of the Southern Historical Association and also as the organization's president in 1988. He left an ineffaceable imprint on all of these institutions.
