Shifters at War

The wolves of Tanaka and Hat Island packs had credible information that a coup was coming — not the declaration of war they'd expected on shifters, but a military coup of the U.S. presidency.

"Not our problem," they would have said a year ago. Humans do human things. Shifters don't intervene. A lot of things had changed in a year.

More had changed than Haru Ito could even begin to say. He was the pack Second to Alpha Akihiro Tanaka, and he had stood at that man's command for 120 years. Now he'd been commanded to leave Seattle and go to Washigton, D.C., to find who knew about the coup and who needed to know, and to form an alliance with the civilian administration against their own military.

Because what the shifters knew and couldn't tell them was that the secret weapon the military planned to use was to out the wolves. To tell the American people that there were terrorists among them, and they were shifters.

And then it wouldn't matter who won the coup. There would be civil war between the U.S. military and a very small, shifter population. Shifters would fight, Haru thought grimly. Fight to the death. And although shifters had some things going for them, Haru knew it was likely they'd lose.

But to send him to be the one to broker a treaty between the civilian administration and the shifters? They were in desperate times if the World Council of Alphas' best idea was to send a man usually described as a stone-cold killer to do the negotiating.
