INTRODUCTION Renal cell cancer (RCC) is the most common malignant tumour of the kidney and is the third most common urological malignancy after prostate and bladder cancer. The mortality rate worldwide exceeds 100 000 per year. Clear cell carcinoma is the most frequent form of RCC (75%) next to chromophilic carcinoma (papillary, 10-15%), chromophobic carcinoma (5-10%) and collecting duct tumours (rare).
