Miss Harriett Lovell's brother may have finally landed himself into such trouble even she won't be able to get him out. Despite being five years younger, it's always been Harry who has taken care of Freddy. But when he's accused of stealing a priceless emerald to pay off his gaming debts, Harry has to do something.
William, the Marquess of Midhurst, is looking forward to finding a wife for himself. She must, however, be beautiful, charismatic, and as wonderful as he is… and have a large dowry to help with the slight pinch in his finances. The only problem Midhurst foresees in finding this epitome of womanhood is that his own name and reputation are being threatened by some silly cub who owes him money and may have stolen a gem to rival the Kohinoor Diamond to pay it. When Midhurst discovers an adorable, driven a young lady trying to discover the emerald’s true thief, Midhurst finds himself drawn in to assist.
Midhurst is quickly put in his place by the spirited Miss Lovell, but even he must admit (although never out loud) that she is shockingly efficient and logically minded. Harry doesn't want the help of a handsome, arrogant nobleman, but he can be annoyingly useful and strangely nice to be around.
How long must Harry and Midhurst deal with one another before common sense leads the way to respect and—dare they even think it?—love?
