I am the vampire king.

Chicago is my city. The midwestern United States is my territory.

I have been the vampire king for decades. And now, another vampire is trying to steal it all from me. He's playing dirty, too.

Stealing humans. Forcing them to donate their blood to vampires, instead of us paying for the service like I've decreed. Luring other vampires to his side because why should we have to ask, when we are the superior species?

So, yeah, my hands are a tad full when Anya Glenshire, a human lawyer who hates vampires, stumbles into my life. I rescue her from kidnappers. Kidnappers sent by my nemesis.

And now he's furious that I thwarted his plan. Which means little miss vampire hater Anya isn't safe. She needs a bodyguard.

Don't ask me why I assign myself to the task. I don't even like humans, except as a food source.

But something about Anya makes me rethink my stance. Which isn't healthy for either of us.

Because when my enemy realizes Anya means more to me than just a drink, the gloves come off.

And Anya is the one most at risk, while I'm the one with the most to lose.
