Their burgeoning relationship and attempts to end Pestilence's apocalyptic threat are impeded by the lingering effects of Arik's torture and personal demons, Limos's shame over long-held secrets and lies, and the fight against the forces arrayed against humanity. A secondary plot involving Limos's brother Thanatos adds more character torment while setting up the next installment. Ione balances all the angst with plenty of action, sexual tension, and dark humor.
