Publisher Description
Shirley was written by Charlotte BrontÎ and published in 1849. Shirley was originally published under the pseudonym Currer Bell.
Shirley is set during the Industrial depression (1811 to 1812). The novel opens at the factory of Robert Moore, who is waiting for some machines to arrive which will make his business more efficient (but which will also put more people out of work). The machines do not arrive as they are damaged by angry workers along the way. Although Robert is having financial difficulties, he still tries his hardest to get out of debt.
This edition is annotated with a critical essay and biography about the life and times of the Bronte family.
