What happens when you're born a shifter, but don't understand what you are. Because you were tossed into the trash as a new born, then raised in a system that labels you as a troubled child. You grow up, never being loved, never being touched with affection, never encouraged, never validated.

Kristofer Ferris knows what it feels like first hand, because that's the life he's lived.

Zakary Carstat has his own demons and secrets, but at one time, he knew what unconditional love felt like. Until it was ripped from him, leaving him at the mercy of the same system that's raising Kris.

He meets Kris in their latest, and last, foster home.  A place they're sent because no one else wants them. It's make it there, or spend their remining time in an institution until they age out at eighteen. 

Kris chooses to run away rather than endure yet another wasted effort by people that think they can fix him.

Zak choses to stick it out.

Life goes on, years pass, then one fateful night, Zak sees Kris again.
