Descripción editorial

Demons, also translated as The Possessed or Devils, is a powerful political and psychological novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky that examines radical ideology, moral disorder, and the destructive consequences of extremism. Set in a provincial Russian town, the story follows a group of revolutionary conspirators whose ambitions and rivalries gradually create fear, violence, and social chaos. At the center is Nikolai Stavrogin, a charismatic but deeply troubled aristocrat whose influence affects many of the novel’s characters. Another key figure, Pyotr Verkhovensky, manipulates others in an attempt to build a secret revolutionary movement based on control, fear, and unquestioning loyalty.

As political ideas become detached from moral responsibility, personal relationships collapse and violence escalates. Dostoevsky explores the dangers of nihilism, fanaticism, spiritual emptiness, and the pursuit of power without ethical limits. The novel also examines guilt, faith, freedom, and the struggle to find meaning in a rapidly changing society. Combining satire, tragedy, philosophical debate, and psychological insight, Demons presents a disturbing vision of a community consumed by destructive ideas. It remains one of Dostoevsky’s most challenging and influential works, offering a profound reflection on ideology, morality, and human nature.
