Tom Grogan

Francis Hopkinson Smith — the engineer who built the foundation of the Statue of Liberty and a watercolorist collected by major museums — drew this 1896 novel from a woman he had watched with his own eyes. Tom Grogan is a stevedore contractor on the Staten Island waterfront who hires and fires and faces down both the union and the local bosses — and is in fact a woman, running her dead husband's business under his name because no one would give a contract to a widow.
