Publisher Description

A flirty thief.
A dutiful prince.
Will she con him out of the treasure, or will she lose her heart instead?

Alanna is just a street rat struggling to stay alive. With the help of a few fancy dresses, she's learned how to charm unsuspecting men out of enough coins to pay her bills.

But all that changed when she stumbled onto Prince Jaemin in disguise. He's her perfect target: handsome, rich, and clueless. So why can't she bring herself to con him like all the others?

And when a mysterious woman offers her a magic lamp to transform into a princess, Alanna will have to choose between her dreams or her heart.

A playful and twisty retelling of Aladdin, A Spark of Storms is the first book of Heart of the Queendom, a series of interconnected but stand-alone fairy tale retellings that feature strong heroines, dreamy princes, and swoon-worthy happily ever afters.

D. Maness ,

A creative and enjoyable retelling of a classic fantasy romance tale

A Spark of Storms is the first I’ve read of Susannah Welch, and I think she did a wonderful job of capturing a new reader. This fantasy romance book is the first in a series of fairy tale retellings which includes several new and creative elements to make the story unique and thrilling, with enough of a similarity to the original to elicit a sense of nostalgia.

The romance in this story is heart-warming and enjoyable to read, while being clean and without love triangles. There is an emphasis on using someone’s curves to their advantage, but nothing overt or lewd. The relationship of the two protagonists is believable, and it endeared me to the characters, making me crave more of their interactions.

My only suggestion is to expand upon certain points to help my immersion. For example, it’s not clear to me why the villain is in the wrong for their motivation. The villain’s methods are dangerous and harmful, but if the villain's plans went smoothly without hurting anyone directly, would their success actually be a bad thing?

Overall, this was a fun read. The story was well written, there were plenty of creative and unique elements while keeping a semblance of the inspiration, and most importantly, the romance was beautiful and pure. As a first time reader, this was a great introduction to this author, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series and more of her work.
