Welcome to Richland, Ohio. Things aren't great.
The town’s biggest employer is closing shop, and Richland's on the brink. It's where Mike Boyd, with his own set of problems, finds himself returning to after decades away.
He's not planning to stay.
But Richland has other plans for Mike, his old friend Dave, and a newcomer Andi. They're caught in a swirl of local troubles, private equity, executive theft… and something extremely weird involving Jeremy Keller’s prize cow.
Welcome to Richland. Leave your expectations behind. Bring a tarp.

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
John Scalzi has a gift for taking an absurd science fiction premise completely seriously—and making us laugh while he does it. Mike Boyd, who’s recently lost his job, returns to his tiny hometown of Richland just as the local meat-processing plant, which is the town’s economic lifeline, is threatened with closure. Then a cow explodes, and things get considerably weirder. Scalzi fills Richland with people who sound like they’ve known one another forever, and their funny, matter-of-fact conversations keep the increasingly bizarre events surprisingly grounded. Even a gloriously profane prologue told from a rabbit’s point of view feels right at home. But the monsters are only half the story. Scalzi has plenty of fun taking aim at private equity, corporate greed, and the forces hollowing out small-town America, while never losing sight of the people stuck dealing with the consequences. Monsters of Ohio is a gory, goofy, warmhearted story that left us wondering exactly who the real monsters are.
