What the War Took From Us

They promised she could go home. They were lying.

When the War Office nails an eleven-day eviction notice to the church door, Ada Thorne loses everything but the letters. Her farm. Her mother's grave. The gate her husband never got to fix. In a single autumn morning, an entire English village is swept behind army wire — and told, falsely, that it's only for the duration.

Two thousand miles away, Jack Thorne is fighting a war he can barely describe to the wife he can barely picture anymore. Between them lies nothing but paper: five years of letters, each one a little more careful than the last, each one hiding exactly what the other most needs to hear. When a cruel wartime rumor slips into the gap between his silence and her restraint, it threatens to do what the German army never managed — end them.

What the War Took From Us is a sweeping WWII historical fiction novel that moves between Ada's fight to hold a shattered home front together and Jack's brutal campaign through Italy, told in alternating points of view and the letters that both connect and betray them. Inspired by the real, largely forgotten story of British villages requisitioned and never returned, this is a wartime marriage novel about the cost of protecting the people we love from the truth — and what it takes, years later, to finally tell it.

For readers who love emotionally rich WWII fiction, epistolary storytelling, and family sagas that don't flinch from the hard cost of survival, this is a story about a broken promise, a marriage tested past what either of them thought it could bear, and the choice — made over and over, not just once — to stay.

The war took the land. It nearly took them too. Read What the War Took From Us today and find out what survived.
