The Seal of Mud

When the law protects injustice, defiance becomes the only choice.

Florence, 1378. A city starving, divided, and ready to erupt.

Twenty-two-year-old Bernardo di Ser Landoccio is a scribe in the Republic’s Chancery and a disciple of Coluccio Salutati. He places his faith in the written word, the rule of law, and the authority of the seal. But an assignment in the warehouses and workshops of the Oltrarno draws him into the world of the wool workers. There he meets Gemma, a young spinner who knows the bitter price of hunger—and how little the pleas of the voiceless are worth.

As the Ciompi uprising tears Florence apart and the people lay siege to the Palazzo dei Priori, Bernardo discovers that ledgers, court rulings, and official ordinances are far from neutral. An added word can strip away a right. A name entered in the wrong register can condemn a man. A wax seal can turn a lie into truth.

Torn between loyalty to his office and the desperate urge to save Gemma, Bernardo must decide how far he is prepared to go—even if it means betraying everything he has ever believed in.

Five voices recount the same fateful summer from irreconcilable perspectives. Bernardo, Gemma, Coluccio Salutati, Luigi Guicciardini, and Michele di Lando together form a vivid, choral portrait of a city where those who hold the ink dictate the fate of those who have only their hands.

The Seal of Mud is a meticulously researched and gripping historical novel of love, rebellion, and moral reckoning. A powerful story about the weight of words, the dignity of labour, and the ultimate price of freedom.
