Liberty and the News

Walter Lippmann's Liberty and the News is a sharp defense of truthful journalism and a sobering study of how democracy fails when citizens are cut off from reality. From Benjamin Harris to the modern press, Lippmann argues that newspapers should be common carriers of fact, not instruments of vanity, propaganda, patriotism, or moral crusade. When editors presume to instruct rather than report, public opinion is fed rumor instead of evidence, and government by consent begins to break down. The book widens into a philosophical attack on the easy rhetoric of liberty itself, showing how appeals to free speech are often selective, tactical, and compromised by hidden loyalties. Drawing on Plato, Milton, Mill, and Bertrand Russell, it suggests that tolerance expands only when ideas seem harmless and contracts when fear, social pressure, or political conflict make them threatening. Lippmann also exposes the weakness of mass opinion in a complex world: citizens are asked to judge national and international affairs without firsthand knowledge, while news passes through biased sources, editorial gatekeepers, censorship, and the distortions of war. In times of crisis, this confusion can harden into hysteria, jingoism, and fanaticism, making trustworthy information essential to democratic life.
