The spirit-rapper; an autobiography

Here is the complete, unabridged text of Orestes Augustus Brownson's provocative 1854 novel—a unique fusion of autobiography and allegory that skewers the spiritualist craze and utopian social experiments of antebellum America. Through the narrator's misguided embrace of spirit-rapping, transcendentalist dreams, and revolutionary schemes, Brownson crafts a darkly witty, earnest exposé of intellectual pride and religious deception. This edition presents the original language faithfully, accompanied by a modern introduction that situates Brownson's work within his turbulent life and the era's cultural ferment, as well as reader's notes clarifying historical, philosophical, and religious references. Whether read as a forgotten literary curiosity or a sharp religious and social critique, The Spirit-Rapper offers a bracing window into a moment when the supernatural and the political collided.
