My Friend the Chauffeur

Buckle up for one of the first great road-trip novels. First published in 1905, My Friend the Chauffeur follows two irrepressible young women on a motor tour through Edwardian England: Bobbie, a spirited American heiress, records the journey in her diary, while her aristocratic friend Lady Betty reports home in letters. Between engine troubles, dusty lanes, country inns, and the social puzzles of the new motoring age, the pair cannot help noticing that their charming chauffeur seems oddly well-bred for his livery. Told with sparkle and good humor, the Williamsons' novel is a comic romance, a travelogue of a vanishing countryside, and a vivid snapshot of the earliest days of the automobile. This edition reproduces the COMPLETE, UNABRIDGED original text, with a new introduction and reader's notes illuminating its motoring history and literary context. Part of The Founding Texts Library.
