Publisher Description

Josiah Henson's life story unfolds as a searing firsthand account of slavery, faith, suffering, and redemption, introduced by Harriet Beecher Stowe as the testimony of a man whose endurance and Christian forgiveness expose the moral horror of bondage. Born into slavery in Maryland in 1789, Henson begins with the violence that defined his family from the start: his father's brutal punishment after defending his mother from an overseer's assault, and the forced exile that followed. After a brief childhood under the comparatively kind Dr. McPherson, he is shattered by his master's death, the sale of the estate, and the agonizing separation of his mother and siblings at auction. From there, Henson traces his years of hard labor on Southern plantations, the grim realities of slave housing, food, clothing, and exhaustion, and the small acts of joy, mischief, and resistance that sustained enslaved people. He describes secretly helping overworked women, rising in trust, exposing corruption, and then undergoing a spiritual awakening at eighteen that leads toward conversion, preaching, and a deeper moral calling. The narrative moves through betrayal, repeated hardship, and a haunting encounter with enslaved people in despair before culminating in escape to Canada, where Henson builds a new life, aids fugitives, travels to England, and becomes a public voice in the antislavery cause. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
