From Opportunity to Departure

An opportunity to teach in the United States can be exciting—but saying yes is only the beginning.

From Opportunity to Departure guides international teachers through the important period between deciding to pursue a J-1 teaching opportunity and actually leaving home for the United States.

Designed as Book Two of the J1 Journey Teacher Series, this practical guide helps teachers move through the application and preparation process with greater confidence, organization, and realistic expectations. It explores evaluating opportunities carefully, understanding what is being asked of you, preparing documents, navigating interviews and employment discussions, organizing the many details that come before departure, and asking the right questions before making important commitments.

Just as importantly, this book looks beyond paperwork. Preparing for an international teaching experience also means preparing yourself—and the people you love—for a major professional, cultural, financial, and personal transition.

Throughout the book, practical guidance, reflection opportunities, and Journey Journal questions encourage teachers to think carefully about their decisions and prepare intentionally rather than simply rushing toward departure.

The J-1 journey is more than getting a visa, accepting a position, or boarding an airplane. It is the beginning of a cultural exchange experience that can affect your classroom, your family, your community, and your life.

From Opportunity to Departure helps you prepare not only to leave home—but to understand the journey you are preparing to begin.
