The Curlytops at Cherry Farm

Janet and Ted Martin, the curly-haired "Curlytops," begin their summer vacation in a world of warmth, teasing, and country fun, where even combing Ted's hair can turn into a family comedy. They dream eagerly of Cherry Farm, their grandparents' place, imagining cherries, boats, lakes, and endless adventures, while their baby brother Trouble keeps the household lively with one mishap after another. But beneath the laughter lies real worry: Cherry Farm is threatened by debt and a failed wheat crop, and the family must hope that Daddy Martin can help save it. As the summer unfolds, the children's ordinary games become escapades of their own. They dig an enormous hole, rescue themselves from a barn-side trap, and share cheerful moments with Grandpa Martin and their parents. They also visit lame Hal Chester, whose improving condition and plans for a benefit party add another thread of kindness and community. Yet danger and suspense follow too, from Trouble's muddy accidents to a pasture full of sheep closing in around the children, leaving them to wonder what mystery Hal has hidden in his cap.
