The Dash for Khartoum

G. A. Henty's The Dash for Khartoum is a vivid historical adventure set amid the Nile Expedition and the struggle in Egypt and the Sudan. At its heart are two lads brought up as brothers, whose lives are thrown into confusion by a rash decision that leads to separation, danger, and hard-won lessons in loyalty, honesty, and the cost of acting without counsel. Henty's strong moral purpose runs through the story, urging young readers to turn to their parents in trouble rather than hide mistakes. The action is relentless: Edgar and a wounded sergeant are stranded as battle rolls past them toward the river and Metemmeh; exhausted British troops, led on after Sir Herbert Stewart's death by Sir Charles Wilson, fight to the Nile under fire, throw up defenses, repel a fierce Arab charge, and finally collapse in relief at the riverbank. Alongside its military excitement and suspense, the book stands with Henty's broader tradition of spirited children's and young adult fiction—stories of courage, perseverance, faith, and character in settings ranging from sea voyages and frontier life to schools, families, and far-flung adventures.
