The Gifts of Asti

In a ruined mountain sanctuary above the fallen city of Memphir, Varta, the last Maiden of Asti, prepares to abandon a dead world as barbarian conquerors sweep across the land below. With her mute, reptilian companion Lur at her side, she enters the empty temple of Asti and offers a final ritual of devotion before a mysterious cosmic shrine that displays the worlds of the system in miniature. The scene is steeped in sorrow, duty, and the last flicker of a civilization nearing extinction, blending science fantasy with religious mystery. As Varta confronts the end of her people's age, the story closes on a haunting note of sacrifice and transcendence, and is identified as The Gifts of Asti by Andrew North.
