The Last of the Barons

Marmaduke Nevile's ride through medieval London opens a world of glittering rank and grinding bustle, where noble mansions, crowded lanes, orchards, taverns, and ancient landmarks jostle beneath the shadow of history and superstition. Dressed in costly court finery that makes him feel both elevated and exposed, he enters the intimidating orbit of Earl Warwick's household, a fortress-like residence alive with retainers, pages, and servants. There he meets Richard Nevile, the formidable "King-maker," whose immense presence, martial authority, and easy warmth instantly command loyalty. Warwick tests the young man's ambition, then places him in the king's household, revealing the workings of patronage, hierarchy, and political power. Around Warwick, family and faction sharpen into human form: Isabel is bold and fiercely partisan, Anne gentle and troubled, and their father's fierce devotion to York is shadowed by grief, wounded pride, and contempt for the Woodvilles. As Warwick escorts Marmaduke toward Edward IV, the Tower of London emerges as a place of splendor and danger, where royal magnificence conceals suspicion, vanity, and mounting conflict.
