The Life of Mrs. Robert Louis Stevenson

The Life of Mrs. Robert Louis Stevenson reveals the extraordinary story of Fanny Van de Grift Stevenson, a woman of reserve, resilience, and uncommon courage whose life ranged across America, Europe, and the South Seas. Through family legend, letters, memories, and vivid anecdote, the book traces the roots of her character in a line of hardy American ancestors, from Revolutionary forebears to the restless Van de Grifts, and shows how her beautiful, fearless mother and forceful, generous father shaped her independence, fairness, and strength. It then brings to life her Indiana girlhood in a half-frontier world of kitchen gardens, maple sugar, handmade goods, Indian visitors, and wide-open tomboy freedom, where imagination, humor, and family relics filled the home with story and feeling. As the narrative moves outward, Fanny's life becomes an adventure of survival and reinvention. Stormy sea voyages, South Sea hardship, and Robert Louis Stevenson's illness test her endurance, while she repeatedly proves the steady force preserving her family, her husband, and his work. Rich in romance, danger, and historical change, this is both a family chronicle and a sweeping travel narrative. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
