A Bankrupt Heart

After seven weeks hovering between life and death, Nell Llewellyn awakens transformed by fever and burdened by shame, longing only for her mother's comfort. At Panty-cuckoo Farm, her family, the faithful nurse Betsy Hobbs, and the whole village have prayed over her recovery, while Hugh Owen has watched beside her with a devotion so deep it borders on worship. As Nell slowly returns to strength, he brings flowers, fruit, and tender encouragement, and the villagers begin to notice the change in his once sober manner. But Nell's revival brings no peace. She feels unworthy of the life she has regained, cannot imagine a useful future, and fears she has only caused more sorrow. When Hugh finally confesses the long-hidden love he has carried since childhood, Nell can only answer with gratitude and friendship, not the love he hopes for. Misreading her reserve as affection for another, Hugh withdraws, and the estrangement leaves them both in pain. Meanwhile, the Llewellyn family faces mounting hardship as a rent increase from Sir Archibald Bowmant threatens the farm and raises the prospect of emigration to Canada. Against this backdrop of domestic strain, romantic longing, village gossip, and social pressure, the story explores first love, wounded pride, and the struggle to find purpose amid loss.
