A Bankrupt Heart

A runaway carriage throws Lady Ilfracombe into the path of Nell Llewellyn, a striking rural girl whose courage saves her life and quietly awakens old suspicions at Usk Hall. When Nora Lumley travels to the Llewellyns' picturesque farm, Panty-cuckoo, to thank the family, she discovers a warm, old-fashioned household and a daughter whose beauty, pride, and reserve hint at a deeper connection to Lord Ilfracombe and Jack Portland. A sapphire ring, offered in gratitude, becomes the spark for a painful recognition: Nell knows it as Ilfracombe's ring, and the mystery of how it changed hands opens into a web of hidden history, class tension, and fate. As Nell recovers from illness and heartbreak, her longing for the truth drives her back toward the Hall, where she unexpectedly encounters Ilfracombe alive and overwhelmed with remorse and love. Their reunion exposes the passion that has never died and deepens the emotional conflict surrounding Nora, who is being blackmailed by Portland with compromising letters. Torn between humiliation and devotion, Nora chooses honesty, while Nell risks everything to recover the letters and protect the marriage, even as Portland's threats, jealousy, and fear tighten the net around them all.
