Driven to Bay

On the passenger ship Pandora, long sea days turn into a crucible of gossip, flirtation, and buried scandal. Florence Marryat's Victorian novel Driven to Bay follows travelers whose forced closeness exposes secrets as the vessel pushes toward warmer latitudes and, eventually, the long western route south of the Cape of Good Hope. In this floating society, every glance matters and every heart seems at risk. Maggie Greet, witty but haunted by a shameful past, finds herself drawn into a tender, unsettling proposal from Will Farrell, a man carrying his own history of loss and betrayal and his hatred for the fugitive Horace Cain. Their exchange opens toward compassion, trust, and the possibility of redemption. Elsewhere aboard ship, Vernon Blythe's reunion with Iris Harland stirs old feelings and painful misunderstandings, while a dramatic rescue of little Winnie wins him public praise and private anguish. Alice Leyton must confront her divided loyalties and the possibility of accepting Captain Lovell, as Vernon realizes he may finally pursue Iris without dishonor. Between comic scandal, such as a sailor's accidental discovery of women's underclothing in the rigging, and vivid passages of storms, doldrums, and seamanship, the novel blends romance, danger, and social intrigue with a spirited tribute to British sailors and life at sea.
