Juliette Drouet's Love-letters to Victor Hugo

From the stormy politics of France between the July Monarchy and the Revolution of 1848 to the private passions of Victor Hugo's circle, this volume moves with the urgency of history and the intimacy of confession. Alexandre Dumas's republican account of a nation in upheaval is paired with the extraordinary life and letters of Juliette Drouet, creating a portrait of an age shaped by court intrigue, battlefield drama, and devastating love. Juliette's story begins in Fougères, in an orphaned Breton childhood marked by convent discipline, restless spirit, and hard-won independence. She emerges as Pradier's neglected mistress, then as a working actress in Brussels and Paris, before becoming Hugo's lifelong companion and muse. The letters gathered here, written as spontaneous "scribbles" and selected from an immense archive, reveal a woman of beauty, talent, shyness, and fierce emotional intelligence. In their ardent exchanges, Juliette and Hugo speak in a language of jealousy, reassurance, devotion, and pain, tracing a love at once exalted, unequal, and unforgettable.
