The Online Goddess Is His Floor Slave

She times her mother for four-thirty. Any earlier and the call grows another reason to stay open. Any later and the worry turns sharp. Lillian sits in a room arranged for the camera: bed made, closet shut, the easy smile of a girl with nothing to hide. She says she is fine. She says she is tired. She ends it before the lecture can land.

Then she opens the other tab.

The site already knows her. Tens of comments on some pictures, hundreds on others, a follower count that has crossed ten thousand without ever seeing her real face. Tonight she promised a thank-you to someone who has been there since the beginning. A name copied by hand. A photograph that looks almost sweet until it doesn't. She posts it, pins it, and watches strangers tell her what they would do if she moved the paper. The number climbs. She tells them to keep going.

She does not hear the key until it is already in the lock.
He never warns her. He comes in off a wet street and a night that went the wrong way, and the apartment has one rule when he is inside it: the girl from the video call is gone. What thousands of people pay to look at, he walks across the rug and uses. On the desk, her own pictures are still open. On her phone, a boyfriend who has never been allowed through the door keeps texting like he lives in the story she sells him. She answers from the same chair. She tells him it is a girls-only house. She tells him the roommate just got home.

The rent on a place this size should have been impossible. It isn't, because the pictures keep clearing. That is the arrangement. She is twenty, the comments still arriving, the lie to her mother still warm in the room, and the man who does not pay the lease is already deciding how the night ends. Some of it will go back on the site. Some of it will not.
