The first volume collects the voyages made under oar and paddle that readers sent to the Berlin weekly Wassersport between 1883 and 1895. A schoolmaster takes his pupils down the Oder in an eight, a student paddles from the source of the Danube home to Berlin, clerks and engineers row their racing boats to the Baltic, and a doctor takes his wife and a heavy friend down the Weser in three second-hand English canoes.
