We couldn’t stop thinking about Kate Elizabeth Russell’s powerful and deeply disturbing debut. Told from the point of view of its titular heroine, the novel maps two distinct eras of Vanessa’s life. We’re pulled into the thrill and turmoil of 15-year-old Vanessa’s experiences as she embarks on a “romance” with her much older English teacher, Jacob, and grows to feel like he’s the only one who truly understands her. But adult Vanessa is starting to see the story differently, struggling to reconcile the relationship that altered the course of her life with the accusations of other former students who were targeted by Jacob. A palpable feeling of unease pervades Russell’s novel—she does an amazing job of trapping us inside Vanessa’s claustrophobic, traumatized mind. Be prepared to cry
This book was a slow start for me but I couldn’t put it down at the end. I am rating it 4/5 stars because it’s almost too real. The main characters emotions were very frustrating at times but that’s what made it feel so real.
Enlightening in the most heartbreaking way
This book is nothing like I’ve ever read. The character of Vanessa touches your soul in every which way by challenging what it means to be a victim. Such a topical piece that is tragic, profound, and bittersweet.
A heavy read
This book was very dark but thought provoking to say the least. You find yourself at first feeling bad for the protagonist because it’s very clear she was abused and manipulated by a man who targeted her specifically based on that reasoning. But as she grows older I found myself victim-blaming her because she seemed to never fully come to terms that she was abused and that the antagonist was an abuser who didn’t deserve the sympathy and support she provided. And even as the other girls come forward that he’s abused, she sets herself apart. But this is a true story of how easily young girls can be taken advantage of and how it comes to shape their whole life and who they turn out to be.
