Publisher Description
Rafael, king of the wererats, must fight to the death to defend his crown. He wants Anita Blake, one of his closest allies, with him as he faces an opponent unlike any he’s faced before. He will ask Anita to risk everything to be at his side....
But some of the wererats fear that Rafael depends too much on Anita and her ties to the vampires. They believe that there is only room in America for one supernatural king, and Rafael will turn them into nothing more than food for the bloodsuckers.
Among his enemies, a new challenger has arisen who is younger, hungrier, and has dark secrets that could destroy both the wererats and the vampires. Rafael will go into the magical heart of his people to find the power and violence that he needs to save them all, or die trying.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Hamilton's entertaining but overwrought 28th installment of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter urban fantasy series (after Sucker Punch) is equal parts soap opera and adventure. When Rafael, Anita's friend and lover, is challenged to a fight to the death for the throne of the wererat community, Anita is bound to stand by his side and the outcome could drastically alter the balance of supernatural power in America. Wererats only respect strength, so Anita must repeatedly prove herself against a host of opponents, even as she and her allies navigate the complicated politics that govern vampires and shape-shifters alike. Further complications arise when Anita realizes Rafael's challenger has ties to a powerful foe with their own sinister agenda for the wererats. Amid the intrigue, Hamilton still devotes plenty of time to Anita's ever-expanding polyamorous relationships and upcoming wedding to vampire king Jean-Claude. This entry does little to advance the series arc even as it delivers all the escapades readers expect, including copious sex scenes, check-ins with a sprawling supporting cast, and moments of visceral combat. Newcomers may feel lost, but Hamilton's die-hard fans are sure to be pleased.

Better
After the last couple of books, I wasn’t even going to buy another. Glad I did. Short but way better than those prior two atrocities. Gives me hope for the future of Anita Blake.
Loved it
I love the fact we get to know Rafael more. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I do all the others. It would be so nice to have a book about Jean Claude’s life and one about Asher’s life too.
Better and better
The Anita Blake series is by far one of the best and my favorite. This new is based on Rafael and the wererats it been a long time coming cause they were major in the series at first but died out and now back in a major. You will love it!!
