The Alex Verus series.
I’ve read the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher at least three times and about 6 weeks ago I was looking for something to read that would hopefully trigger the same interest. ChatGPT suggested this series as one of five that had a character similar to Harry Dresden. I finally read the first book of the Alex Verus series and thought it wasn’t bad but that it did lack the grit and darkness of Harry Dresden’s Chicago. I tried the second book, then the third. I’ve now read the entire series up to “Risen”, it took about 3 weeks. Alex is not Harry and Luna is not a sexy police detective. But the series definitely works and despite myself I was swept away by it, buying book after book as soon as I finished the last. Is Alex an anti-hero on a par with Batman? Perhaps not. Is he a man with great justifications for behaving badly? By the end of the series the reader is as aware of Alex’s true nature as he/she is entertained by the host of characters in the series. I would happily recommend the books to anyone. Enjoy!
A solid ending
Jacka has tied up the series well - all those story threads coalescing into one big finale. It’s sad to say goodbye to all of the characters I’ve watched grow and change through this amazing series.
