But not all is as it seems. Whispers spread in the night. Tales of amassing armies and midnight assassins. Waking demons and children cast upon altars of fire.

For the young sheepherder, Joshua, the stories seem fantastical. He lives in Shulem and nothing exciting ever happens in Shulem. Goats outnumber people ten to one. Sheep fifty to one. And then one morning Joshua returns from the fields to find his uncle's head set on a pike and his mother and sister missing. Finds also a prophet waiting for him beside the ashes of Joshua's house. Together, they flee into the wilderness. Pursued by mysterious assassins through the forests of Bashan and into the Argob, fabled land of the giants, Joshua must learn to put his faith in Elohim even as everything is taken from him. His home, his family, even the slave girl he pulled down a mountain to free.
